I need to finish typesetting a book for work and then finish my take-home Semantics final and then I am free.

My family and girlfriend are going to Everglade City and Bonita Springs next week, and my band might have a small New England tour this summer.

All I want to do is play music and maybe live in the woods for a while.

5 Things We Can Do to Reclaim Cinco de Mayo
It’s...

thinkmexican:

5 Things We Can Do to Reclaim Cinco de Mayo

It’s pretty much official. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become the Mexican version of St. Patrick’s Day.

Multinational corporations like Budweiser and Kraft have effectively turned it into a pseudo-ethnic holiday used as another excuse to get drunk and consume. La Batalla de Puebla is hardly mentioned, including by many Mexicans.

Still fresh in our community’s collective memory, however, is a time before corporations even seemed to care about Mexicans and our traditions and when Cinco de Mayo was a day of community and cultural affirmation.

Kids would dress up as china poblanas and charros, folklórico and danza azteca groups would perform, grills would be ablaze and maybe a parade and a car show would entertain families on this day.

Of course, these traditions are very much alive and are still observed every year in our communities — as the photo above from West St. Paul’s Cinco de Mayo event shows.

The big difference is that today there are entire events posing as Cinco de Mayo festivals but which are actually corporate festivals held to promote products and brands.

Can we take back from multinationals something that has belonged to us for decades?

Can we reclaim Cinco de Mayo as a day that celebrates Mexico’s heroic victory for democracy and freedom over French imperialism in the La Batalla de Puebla?

Of course we can!

Here are 5 things we can do to make it happen:

1. Support events hosted by and for the benefit of local non-profits and community based organizations.

2. Don’t go to corporate Cinco de Mayo events. No matter how much free shit they give away.

3. Remind white people Cinco de Mayo celebrates the killing of white people!

4. Know the history of Cinco de Mayo and La Batalla de Puebla.

5. Promote Mexico making Cinco de Mayo a national holiday, removing the silly claim it’s only celebrated in the US.

Photo: A dancer marches in the Cinco de Mayo parade Saturday, May 4, 2013 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Credit: MPR, Nikki Tundel.

Stay Connected: Twitter | Facebook

Stop being racist. Cinco de Mayo does not celebrate the killing of white people, it celebrates the overthrow of European colonialist aspirations. Plenty of Mexicans are now and were then what would be considered “white,” especially since “white” and “latino” are in no way mutually exclusive.

Getting rid of corporate co-opting of the holiday is a noble thing to do. Stopping the capitalist corruption of things that have actual meaning beyond mere monetary gains is valiant.

Resorting to racism, which further divides the people of the Americas, is a disgusting tactic. We need unity and understanding, not xenophobic half-truths.

Neutral Milk Hotel tickets sold out within 5 minutes. I’ve heard that it’s because insurance does cover hurricanes (New York definitely gets hurricanes. Irene, for instance) and it’s a way of companies avoiding having to pay out - “This wasn’t a hurricane, it was a superstorm!”

As far as I know, the major distinction being made is that Sandy’s destruction derived largely from the storm surges, meaning water coming off of the sea, rather than damage based on rainwater.

In reality, I think that the media is just using it because coining new buzzwords is this huge trend. There are all of the horrific masculine words (“Bromance,” “man cave,” “manscaping”), a bunch of technological terms (“app,” “tweat,” “notebook”), and a slew of other coinages or reappropriations (“superstorm” and, especially after 9/11, “hero”) — all of which we already have words for. Respectively: “friendship” “den” “grooming” “program” “post” “laptop” “hurricane” and “civil servant.”

It’s an interesting phenomenon, the marriage of marketing and language.

I hate the word “superstorm.”

bubbleslayer:

(boost the signal)

Charles Ramsey is a hero. He doesn’t wear a suit of high-tech armor. He doesn’t wear a cape. He’s just an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life.

Then, he saw a woman asking for help.

And he helped her.

He didn’t walk away.

He didn’t think of himself.

He just helped her.

It took less than a day for someone to make this heroic man into a joke.

As proud as Charles Ramsey makes me to be a human, those people make me ashamed.

No, he doesn’t speak perfectly.

No, he didn’t take the time to fix his hair before he went on camera.

He’s an African American man from an economically depressed neighborhood, city, and state.

And for that, he’s mocked and ridiculed.

It breaks my heart.

Now, in yet another heroic moment Mr. Ramsey’s response to Anderson Cooper’s inquiry about a possible reward Charles has proven he’s truly worthy of the hero mantle.

No, no, no. Bro, I’m a Christian, an American, and just like you. We bleed same blood, put our pants on the same way. It’s just that you got to put that – being a coward, and I don’t want to get in nobody’s business. You got to put that away for a minute…I tell you what you do, give [the reward] to them. Because if folks been following this case since last night, you been following me since last night, you know I got a job anyway. Just went picked it up, paycheck. What that address say? […] 2203 Seymour. Where are them girls living? Right next door to this paycheck. So yes, take that reward and give it to—that little girl[.]

Thank you Charles Ramsey.

Thank you.

The full interview w/ Anderson Cooper can be found here.

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/?iref=allsearch

What an awesome person

YEAH!!! AWESOME!!!! COOL DUDE!!!

Except that he is a serial felon, convicted multiple times for domestic abuse! That means beating his wife, fellas! And he gets all of the credit for this rescue, rather than the dude who did most of the actual work in rescuing these women, largely because that guy doesn’t speak English and isn’t funny!

He’s a complex figure, just like any other human being, and he has good qualities and he has faults. He certainly did something heroic, and is certainly, in part, responsible for saving four people. But let’s not sanctify him. He’s only human.

Psyched about cicadas.

Psyched about cicadas.

My left ear.
